Designing Connections: Exploring Creativity Through Co-Curricular Involvement

In my department, we help organise and plan different events which happens in the School of Design such as the Halloween events, Prom and even our very own Sports Day. Through this, we aim to bring to the students a sense of community spirit and involvement and also help bring the students together to forge new friendships and camaraderie among themselves.

The Design Studies Club stands as a distinctive Co-Curricular Activity exclusive to our esteemed School of Design. Serving as the vibrant hub for our creative community, it not only spearheads a myriad of engaging events but also fosters a nurturing environment, prioritizing the holistic well-being of our fellow designers.

Halloween Night

For Halloween, my department was tasked to help come up with a theme for one of the escape rooms we were supposed to come up with. So we decided to do a hospital themed escape room. We did the planning of the idea and improved on it. We also planned the props and outsourced for them on our own. Then after, we painted and cut the props we needed from cardboard and also brought the other props we needed from home. We also had to take shifts to man the registration booth and also to manage the escape rooms as the ushers and scare actors.

Prom Night

For Prom, my department was in charge of planning the night performance during the dinner receptions. We planned out a series of events, gameshows and singers that would help perform and the schedule for the night to keep within the time frame given. We also planned out what kind of gameshows we wanted and thought of things that were interactive for the year threes as it was mainly for them. We also planned out the main event which was the prom king and queen and how that segment would be like. We also helped decorate the area with decorations that helped give the mood and atmosphere of prom and also helped with the carrying of musical instruments for the performance.

Design Orientation Camp

What is Design Orientation Camp about?

For Design School, it is a three day camp for the freshman of the School of Design. It is to help the freshman assimilate into the school and also introduce them to the high spirited community of design school. They would also get to spend time with their batch mates through the activities to better forge friendships with their peers.

For subcommittee members like myself, it is a five month preparation where we plan out the theme of the camp, the flow of how camp would be and the groupings for each classes. However this is just a rough idea of what camp is about. There is a lot more details and work put into this camp as we pride ourselves on making the camp exciting for the freshman. It is so large scale that there are seven departments for this camp such as Group Leaders, Programme, Admin, Welfare, Logistics, Creative and Media.

My department is under the group leaders which means we are the face of the camp as we are the people who would come into contact with the freshman guiding them through the activities and ensuring their health and well being as well. We would plan the routing and do normal practices and trial runs on the routing plans and also where to walk and where are the out of bounds areas. We also practice cheer to introduce to the freshman and also help with painting the group flags. We also plan the icebreaker games we would be playing with the freshman and safety precaution and drills needed in case of emergencies
